Justin is in Kindergarten

Posted by Carla Fri, 25 Aug 2006 13:01:14 GMT

My sweet boy went to Kindergarten this morning. Justin was so excited and the whole time I am trying to put on the brave face, my heart is breaking. He only took pause when he stepped over the threshold of the room. It was as if he was saying to himself "I am finally here! I made it!"

I took some pictures but mostly he just wanted to talk to the kids around him. One of the girls on his soccer team sits across from him so he was chatting with her when I walked out. A boy was walking hand in hand, down the hall, with his mom sobbing. "I don't want to go to school!" I am thinking the whole time I can totally relate! If I could be five for a few minutes I would be sobbing right along with you!

Joshua named IT

Posted by Carla Fri, 25 Aug 2006 00:24:01 GMT

Today we were in the car and Joshua was telling me some of the self-defense strategies he has learned. He said "right down the middle of someone's body are the most sensitive places like your eyes, nose, mouth, throat, chest, stomach, and that place" I said "that place....... meaning your groin?" "Yes but I call it Gwen" I said "Josh, that is a girls name you really should not call it a girls name, you can just call it your groin" "No, how about Riely then?" "Well Josh, Riely is both a girls and boys name." He says very excitedly "I know! I will just call him Max!" Typical male.

Timex Clock Radio

Posted by Carla Wed, 23 Aug 2006 16:34:26 GMT

I have this cool timex Nature sounds clock radio we bought when my radios were blown out by the lightning strike this spring. I love the nature sounds and my favorite has always been the ocean rolling in with the sea birds calling away.

I guess I should say it use to be my favorite. Somehow my alarm set to this ocean sound for 7 am this summer. I am not a morning person so for this to suddenly set for 7 am every morning was greatly annoying. I don't have the manual so I have been pushing buttons and trying to turn the alarm off, to no avail. It is easy enough to turn off in the morning but who wants to be woken up when they don't have to be up by a bunch of sea birds?

I had the bright idea of turning the volume all the way down one night this last week only to find in the morning that I had actually turned it all the way up and I woke up in the surf and sand with seagulls diving and screaming at me. It was rather a frightening experience, not the soft sweet mellow slow wake up you would expect from a happy nature sounds alarm clock.

Well, I broke down and finally called customer service today. The lady asked me for my problem then asked me for the model number. When I explained how hard I had been working to turn this alarm off all summer she says calmly with only a bit of mockery in her voice "do you see the #2 alarm button on the top of your clock?" "Yes, right here" "gently tap it, do not hold it down just one tap will turn it off." The little display had the alarm bell suddenly disappear. That is just so wrong.

First Day of School

Posted by Carla Wed, 23 Aug 2006 16:20:05 GMT

Joshua went to third grade yesterday for his first day of school. Since I taught 3rd grade for years and it is my favorite age to teach I was a little sad I could not be there at school, a fly on the wall to watch all that was going on. His Teacher, Mrs. Baird, had been a Science teacher for 5 years so she loves Science just like Josh. She has multiple animals and insects, singing cockroaches, and a millipede that is 9 inches long and an inch around. These were the two that grossed me out the most so I completely forget the other 3 or so critters she has. Joshua though thought this was the greatest thing in the world!

Joshua is in class with one of his good friends down the street Declan so he is in seventh heaven. I am going to be up to school more often this year since Justin starts Kindergarten on Friday. I hope to be in their classes to help every other week or so, we will see how that works with an infant. Hmmmmm

The Coke Stand

Posted by Carla Tue, 22 Aug 2006 18:27:01 GMT

We had the neighborhood garage sale this past weekend and my children asked if they could have a lemonade stand. They had one last year and made good money so they really wanted to try again.

I set up their small card table and kid size chairs with a sign simply reading "Cold Drinks 50 cents". They had a big cooler I had filled with Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Bottles of Water with a lot of ice. It was over 90 degrees and the humidity was through the roof! They sat there for 6 hours only coming in for drinks, potty breaks and lunch. Their attention was only swayed a couple of times by toys I was trying to sell that they had not played with in years.

Tiffany actually burned out sooner though. She was out there for almost 2 hours helping her brothers when she came up to me in the garage and said "Mommy, I'm just too hot! Is it ok if I just don't make any money and go inside?" I told her she could go in and she had done a very good job.

Justin and Josh did well. They made a total of about $33. I can't guarantee this was all they made as Josh was often counting the money and there was a very brisk breeze that blew money out quite often. Justin was usually on top of it before it blew away though.

It was a hard person indeed who could resist such cute little faces. Joshua felt too shy to really ask too many people and made Justin do most of the talking. If someone got by Justin's first attempt and would come up the driveway into the garage, Justin would turn around and holler up the drive " That's ok, you can buy a cold drink when you come back out if you want to." Most often those people actually came back out and bought a drink.

One man came up with two drinks in his hands and said "Well, I really didn't want anything but when that little one there asked me if I please wanted to buy a cold drink, I just could not resist so I got two!"

Justin's Vocabulary

Posted by Carla Fri, 04 Aug 2006 00:39:35 GMT

Justin has been so cute and his words so enjoyable that it is hard to believe he will be growing out of this stage soon and these words will be just a memory. We were going to a birthday party for his little friend Riley. Since Justin has most of his r’s inside words but not at the beginning it was wiwee’s party and wiwee this and wiwee that. In Wisconsin he asked Lisa if he was getting Bug Spway or Sun Squeem when she started spraying some foreign substance on his arms and legs. Today though he started to cry when Josh and Tiffany both started to correct his L’s and giggling a little when he could not say it right. I of course stopped Josh and Tiff but my heart broke a little for him. I know he wants to say it right and he really is trying to fix it but I just love his little language and I am really going to miss it when he looses it.
